QuoteAn 83-year-old grandmother in Ontario died thanks to Medical Assistance in Dying, better known as MAiD. But her family says she changed her mind, cried, prayed, and begged not to get the injection.

Her granddaughter says Brigitte Stegemann was very confused that morning, had failed a cognitive assessment, and never clearly consented to what was about to happen.

The medical professionals apparently saw it differently... and now police are investigating.

Interesting little data point:

REVEALED: More Canadians die from MAID each year than Americans do from gun homicides

QuoteCanada's medical assistance in dying (MAID) program accounted for more deaths than gun homicides in the United States in 2024. This is despite the US having roughly eight times the population as Canada.

Doctors say B.C. Supreme Court ruling on foreign-trained doctors a 'blow' for rural health care
QuoteDoctors are speaking out after the B.C. Supreme Court ruled the province can't force foreign-trained doctors to work in "underserviced" areas

"It's another nail in the coffin of rural health care," said Charles Helm, a semi-retired physician who has worked in Tumbler Ridge — a small community in B.C.'s Peace Region — for more than 30 years.

Currently, doctors trained in non-Canadian schools are required to live and practise in rural or remote locations in the province for two or three years.

Donor who reported sexual contact with HIV-positive person allowed to give plasma in Regina: documents
QuoteHealth Canada inspection documents reveal a person who said they'd had sexual contact with someone who tested positive for HIV was allowed to give plasma twice at a for-profit donation centre in Regina.

An inspection exit report obtained by CBC details multiple deficiencies that led federal regulators to find the Grifols paid plasma centre in Regina non-compliant following an inspection that began Jan. 13 of this year.

That includes documenting "multiple times" when people who had punctures and bruising on their veins were allowed to give plasma, without any documented additional assessment of the donor's suitability.

Ste. Rose du Lac doctor sounds alarm over staffing shortages
QuoteAn "exhausted" Manitoba doctor is sounding the alarm over staffing shortages that might result in more emergency room closures in Ste. Rose du Lac.

Dr. Ashley Blais, a physician at the community's hospital, says it has recently had to close the emergency department for several days due to the "downstream consequences of flooding and prolonged disruption at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre."

"We opened our doors, and our physicians or nurses and staff absorbed increased patient volumes, additional in-patient pressures, because our neighbours needed us. And that's what we do — that's what rural health-care providers do in a crisis," she said in an interview with CBC News.

Dementia patient found face down in puddle in another neighbourhood after leaving Winnipeg home, lawsuit says
QuoteA company that provides residential care to people with complex behavioural health issues is being sued after a man with a mental disability was allegedly left unsupervised and walked away from the home unaccompanied.

The man, now 38, was diagnosed with dementia and was living at a residential apartment complex in Winnipeg, operated by Cambridge Health Inc., with 24-hour behavioural care services and supervision.

He was not to leave the home unless accompanied by a staff member or a designated family member. The man was in a common area at about 4:30 p.m. on April 3, 2025, when "he was left unsupervised and walked out of the Cambridge home," the lawsuit says.

Manitoba hospitals don't have capacity to do their own testing, Dynacare official says
QuoteDynacare's chief medical officer says Manitoba hospitals don't even have the capacity to deal with their own testing, after being asked whether the province's public health system could handle the lab company's work.

Dr. Jenisa Naidoo said Thursday some of the lab work that's supposed to be done in provincial health-care facilities is being sent to the private company.

Her statement is "not based on [Shared Health's] information. It's based on the fact that we get the work," Naidoo said during a Manitoba Labour Board hearing that will determine whether Dynacare workers provide an essential service.

QuoteDherdi must pay the college $8,000 in investigative costs and will face heavy restrictions on their nursing licence if they seek reinstatement, the panel said.

Does Dherdi self-identify as plural?  ???
Might just be a case of the CBC reporter not wanting to assume "their" gender... I notice this is one of the articles where the reporter isn't named. I was checking to see whether it was an obvious fruitcake.

Winnipeg nurse punished for 2025 error 'no registered nurse should have made'
QuoteA former Winnipeg nurse who admitted to packing a patient's anus with about 10 centimetres of gauze when they were supposed to dress a nearby wound has been disciplined by the provincial regulator.

Kamaljeet Kaur Dherdi pleaded guilty to professional misconduct earlier this year after the March 2025 incident at Holy Family Home, a personal care home on Aberdeen Avenue, the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba's disciplinary panel said in a written decision dated Aug. 19.

Dherdi must pay the college $8,000 in investigative costs and will face heavy restrictions on their nursing licence if they seek reinstatement, the panel said.

Recovery work continues after ransomware attack at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre
QuoteManitoba's largest hospital is still working to recover from a cyberattack a week after first discovering it.

Shared Health says in an update that the ransomware has hit maintenance systems at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre and CancerCare Manitoba but that patient care is not affected.

The health authority says its investigation has found the attack has affected central monitoring of its heating, ventilation and cooling systems but that they are still operating and being monitored locally.

Winnipeg health authority asks long-term care facilities to make space for hospital patients
QuoteWinnipeg's health authority has asked a trio of long-term care facilities to make spaces available for some hospital patients as the local health-care system grapples with a surge in demand.

Riverview Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre and Misericordia Health Centre have all been told to find temporary capacity to take on patients, a Winnipeg Regional Health Authority spokesperson said in an emailed statement to CBC News. The patients are those who no longer need acute care but still require some level of care before they transition to other settings, the spokesperson said.

The WRHA "continues to experience exceptionally high demand for care across the health-care system," they said, and facilities across the region "have a shared responsibility to identify and use available capacity to help respond to periods of increased pressure."

Quote from: fluxmaster on Jul 27, 2026, 06:56 AMA "socialist" system, such as Canada's, can work just fine if done properly, and if you have a homogenous population that doesn't abuse the system.

The "system" is the problem, but too complex a topic to get into here. It begins with people who don't take of themselves and ends with others profiting from those personal failings.  Yes, there is a better way, and the only nation which was trending in the right direction was destroyed 81 years ago.

QuoteMany Americans who come to Europe comment on how much better their health care system is than ours.

For now, perhaps, but Europe's demographics are changing.  It also hasn't hurt that they haven't had to pay for their own defense for over three-quarters of a century.  That leaves plenty of money for social spending.

Btw, I assume you are excluding Britain's NHS which is now every bit the nightmare Canada's is.

Quote from: fluxmaster on Jul 27, 2026, 05:33 AMAlso, unlike in the United States, people in Canada rarely declare bankruptcy over medical debts.

I suppose that's some small consolation while one is dying in the ER, waiting to see someone.  At least the estate will go intact to the heirs.  ::)

Bankruptcy is not the worst thing in the world. My point was that a "capitalist" health care system is not the ideal. A "socialist" system, such as Canada's, can work just fine if done properly, and if you have a homogenous population that doesn't abuse the system. Many Americans who come to Europe comment on how much better their health care system is than ours.
