There has been a huge amount of media consolidation in the United States. Many "local" news outlets, including television, radio, and newspapers, are owned by the same large corporations. Some radio stations have a D.J. that pretends to be local and makes casual references to local events but has never been to the city that the station is broadcasting from and may live hundreds or ever thousands of miles away. If a local emergency happens, the "local" D.J. knows nothing about it.
Has Canada become the same?

- Aug 12, 2026, 05:34 PMI've been noticing a glaring deficit in the CBC's pretensions to representing investigative journalism or being a legitimate news outlet. This is a separate issue from their being an organ of propaganda - although it is also possible that focusing too heavily on refining their propaganda has been detracting from their ability to function as a reporter of news stories.
Exhibit A: Large International Stories
Two pilots killed in US Army helicopter crash - Russian Times
This is a significant incident, albeit not a Canadian one; yet there is no "maple curtain" line of demarcation between Canada and the rest of the world. Certainly not between us and our closest neighbour, the United States of America. And yet this is just one example of a reasonably big story, involving the tragic loss of human life and a military snafu, plus a "large wildfire". I have seen countless other examples of significant events and incidents that I learned of through sources other than the CBC. This example came from the Russian news service, Russian Times.
So, the CBC is faltering on covering significant international events.
Exhibit B: Significant Local Stories
At the other end of the scale is local events. Right here in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, a relatively new pizzeria burned to the ground... and I knew nothing of it until I drove past it a couple of days later and was shocked to see a burned-out ruin where I had not too long ago enjoyed delicious food. With that pizzeria gone, the only other restaurant in town is at the local hotel. There's no way that isn't a significant blow to local tourism. And yet this never got reported by the CBC, our supposed national news service.
Big, international stories; local, significant stories. The CBC is faltering at both ends of the news spectrum.
Exhibit C: Spelling and Grammatical Literacy
And then there's literacy. Spelling and grammatical errors are on the rise. Yesterday I read a story about how Canadians were calling for American Aambassador Hoekstra to be expelled. Yes, Aambassador. It was spelled that way both in the article and on the front-page blurb. They have since corrected it - they have a form on every page for readers to report any sort of error in a story - but it indicates a general lack of proof-reading effort prior to publishing.
Much as with the big, international stories and the local, significant stories, I present here just one example of a spelling error. But the reason I'm writing this article is because I have been consistently observing large numbers of examples of all three shortcomings. There was a restaurant called Rita's Kitchen that burned down in Teulon, Manitoba, back in 2024. Again, CBC never covered that story.
Possible factors in the CBC's demise may include the aforementioned focus on producing propaganda; multiculturalism and the drive for "diversity" resulting in an increase in foreign peoples less competent in the English language; perhaps even technological illiteracy and the struggle to compose articles competently through whatever software interface they may be using to process and publish their articles.
