The man, now 38, was diagnosed with dementia and was living at a residential apartment complex in Winnipeg, operated by Cambridge Health Inc., with 24-hour behavioural care services and supervision.
He was not to leave the home unless accompanied by a staff member or a designated family member. The man was in a common area at about 4:30 p.m. on April 3, 2025, when "he was left unsupervised and walked out of the Cambridge home," the lawsuit says.

The "system" is the problem, but too complex a topic to get into here. It begins with people who don't take of themselves and ends with others profiting from those personal failings. Yes, there is a better way, and the only nation which was trending in the right direction was destroyed 81 years ago.

Bankruptcy is not the worst thing in the world. My point was that a "capitalist" health care system is not the ideal. A "socialist" system, such as Canada's, can work just fine if done properly, and if you have a homogenous population that doesn't abuse the system. Many Americans who come to Europe comment on how much better their health care system is than ours.

Canada still has lower-priced prescription drugs, and many people in the United States living near the border cross into Canada to buy them there. Also, unlike in the United States, people in Canada rarely declare bankruptcy over medical debts.

Decades ago, while waiting in a doctor's office in New York, I watched an Indian doctor say to a woman in a loud voice that anyone in the room could hear, "Mrs. Jones, you have breast cancer!" She just stood there looking stunned. He didn't provide her with any privacy when telling her that.
