Pretty much every part of a country is going to go into decline as it buckles under the weight of the multi-cult. I have a dedicated thread for what's happening to the medical system; most likely will be making one for the education system; and a couple of recent incidents have made me decide it's time to create this thread.

Manitoba sheriff's officer dead after vehicle collides with train near Portage la Prairie

A 28-year-old Manitoba sheriff's officer is dead after the van he was driving collided with a train west of Portage la Prairie.

Manitoba RCMP were sent to the crash site on Road 40 W. in the rural municipality of Portage la Prairie around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Early investigation results suggest the van was headed south when it collided with a train, rolled and landed in a ditch, RCMP said in a news release.

3 people dead after 'tragic accident' during transfer from Edmonton correctional facility

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says two of its officers and a person the agency says was an offender have died as a result of a "tragic accident during a transfer from Edmonton Institution for Women."

The federal agency announced the deaths in a social media post Thursday night but provided no further details.

CBC News has contacted CSC and local police for more information about what happened.

The Canadian province of Manitoba has elected the first First Nations premier of a province in Canada. Manitobans elected an NDP government led by Wab Kinew, was raised as a young boy on the Onigaming First Nation in northwestern Ontario, later moving with his family to Winnipeg.

If ever there was a tribe who deserved a casino, it's the "Oni-gaming".

Decades ago, I remember reading about a San Jose, California police officer who, in hot pursuit of a suspect, tried to drive around the gates at a railroad crossing and was hit and killed by an oncoming train. It was reckless, but, at the same time, I get it. He didn't want to be thought of as a wuss for waiting for the train and letting the suspect get away. Unfortunately, the laws of physics don't care about your motives.

A while back I was riding a Winnipeg Transit bus home from work, and much to my astonishment, as the gates came down and the lights were flashing, the driver decided to zig-zag around the gates and zoom through in front of the approaching train. I guess he was in a hurry to end his shift.

I can see all kinds of scenarios in which a vehicle gets trapped on tracks in front of an approaching train, variously from breaking down, getting physically snagged on something, or simply boxed in by traffic. But even then I'd imagine one would notice an approaching train and at least attempt to exit the vehicle. I suppose some people get caught up in an overblown sense of duty and don't want to abandon the vehicle. "If this vehicle gets smashed by that train, they're gonna make me pay for it! Gotta stay in here and rescue it somehow!"

I hope you at least made a complaint against the driver. That's a terminal offense. That driver needed to face legal charges. A lawsuit might even have been in order.

In California, I was once riding a local transit bus when the driver drove through a railroad crossing just as the gates were coming down, and one of the gates hit the top of the bus as it was coming down. I memorized the bus number and time of the incident and made a complaint against the driver with the transit agency. That was the only time that the agency ever responded to one of my complaints; the rest they just ignored. Ignoring railway gates is a very serious offense. In a collision with a train, the train will win every time.

I don't doubt it amounted to reckless endangerment, but I was dead on my feet and just happy to get home that day. I'm guessing the driver was in the same state as myself.

'Extreme' underfunding of legal aid faces constitutional challenge in Manitoba

The federal and provincial governments are being accused of violating the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by underfunding legal aid for criminal defence in Manitoba.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association on Thursday filed a notice of application Thursday morning in the Court of King's Bench, listing the attorney general of Canada and the government of Manitoba as respondents.

"Under the Charter, all accused persons — regardless of their economic status — are presumed innocent and have the right to ... receive fair trials and to the equal benefit and protection of the law," the filing says.

Dozens of Manitoba circuit court sittings cut due to judge shortage

Cutbacks are coming to circuit court sittings in several Manitoba communities, and a shortage of judges is to blame, says the chief judge of the provincial court.

In a notice posted Wednesday on the provincial court website, Chief Judge Ryan Rolston said changes at nine rural circuit court locations, as well as St. Boniface provincial court in Winnipeg, will result in 68 fewer circuit court sittings next year.

Under the reductions, which take effect April 1, 2027, there will be a total of 108 sittings at those locations each year, down from the current 176, the notice said.
