Young man guilty of 1st-degree murder of 19-year-old sentenced as adult

The young man who was found guilty of the first-degree murder of 19-year-old Daphnée Jolivet in 2023 has been sentenced to life without possibility of parole for 10 years.

Shimei-Baraka Saiba was 16 years old at the time of the offences. His identity was protected until Friday, when Judge José Rhéaume handed down an adult sentence at the Quebec City courthouse.

On Oct. 25, 2023, Jolivet was sexually assaulted and killed in her parent's home in the Maizerets neighbourhood of Quebec City, while her brother was present.

Canada had the death penalty until 1999 and executed its last convict in 1962.

I believe so.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think there's also a rule that one is to be released after serving two thirds of their sentence if they're on good behaviour.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think there's also a rule that one is to be released after serving two thirds of their sentence if they're on good behaviour.

In other words, if you're sentenced to thirty years, you're released after twenty, but if you're sentenced to life, you're released after ten? That makes a life sentence seem like a better deal to me.

I also wonder whether good behavior means just that or whether it includes professing belief in multiculturalism and equality.
